What Is Renal Cancer?

Renal cell carcinoma is the most common type of cancer that affects the kidneys. Situated deep within your torso, these two bean-shaped organs filter your blood for impurities and excess salt, then transform the liquid waste into urine. Renal cancer can develop when healthy cells that line the small tubes in your kidneys undergo abnormal changes that cause them to grow and divide uncontrollably. The excess cells may then build up, bind together and form tumors.

Renal Cancer Symptoms, Causes and Treatment

Symptoms

In many cases, the first noticeable sign of renal cancer is bloody urine. Other symptoms may include:

  • Overwhelming fatigue
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Fever
  • Pain or a lump in your abdomen or back

Causes

The reasons that healthy cells in your kidneys may become cancerous are not yet fully understood. The risk of renal cancer seems to increase with age, smoking, obesity, high blood pressure and certain inherited syndromes.

Treatment

For renal cancer confined to a kidney, the most common treatment is surgery to remove the tumor. If the cancer has spread beyond the kidneys, treatment may include chemotherapy, immunotherapy or targeted therapy. Radiation therapy may also be used to help control symptoms and slow tumor growth.
