Family Medicine Residency Program

Garnet Health Medical Center is proud to offer an ACGME & AOA-approved three-year family medicine residency program. Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine is at the heart of the program. Residents will be engaged in all aspects of Family Medicine from treating OB/GYN patients, newborns, and pediatric patients to having preventative medicine dialogues with adult and geriatric patients.

All our graduates work in their chosen area and feel confident in the training received.  To date, graduates have joined outpatient and urgent care practices in our area and beyond and have joined fellowship programs, too. Several of our graduates joined Garnet Health and dedicate themselves to serving Orange and Sullivan Counties. We trust that our future residents will continue to be committed to improving the healthcare of the surrounding community just as we are committed to training exceptional family physicians.

We have protected didactic time every Tuesday afternoon that focuses on many specialty and subspecialty areas. Some topics include family medicine-specific lectures OMM training, resident-led case presentations and journal club, research topics, as well as procedure workshops. Residents and faculty also participate in hospital-wide Grand Rounds on Thursdays at 5:30 and Patient Safety Workshops held in collaboration with the surgery, emergency medicine, and internal medicine residency programs.

The family medicine program at Garnet Health Medical Center follows a 4-week rotation system. Residents meet as a group with the program director and coordinator at monthly program meetings where they discuss upcoming rotations and receive peer insight among other topics.

Incorporating Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine into the hospital and as part of the patient’s regular treatment has been a priority.

The integration of OMM into Garnet Health Medical Center’s treatment plans has resulted in a resident-run outpatient OMM clinic, located in Garnet Health Medical Center’s Outpatient Building. This clinic is growing rapidly as a result of referrals and word-of-mouth, and so much so that it has established continuity with patients and has expanded to include residents from other specialties. Behavioral Health and Psychiatric screenings have become a vital part of the treatment plans that the OMM and family medicine clinics have to offer.

Resident physicians have become indispensable members of the Garnet Health and surrounding community. Family medicine residents are required to participate in at least two community outreach events per year. Opportunities for involvement include:

  • Health fairs
  • Farmers’ Markets
  • Blood pressure screenings
  • Special events organized by the hospital or the outpatient continuity clinics

As a program, we want the community to know that we are striving to care for their health and wellness in every way possible.

Residents can choose from a variety of electives including those listed below.  Residents can also elect torepeat a regularly scheduled rotation or create a new elective in collaboration with faculty to meet their individual needs and aspirations.

  • Nephrology
  • Pulmonology
  • Neurology
  • Endocrinology
  • Gastroenterology
  • Hematology/Oncology
  • Rheumatology

  • Curriculum Vitae
  • Personal Statement
  • Official Medical School Transcript

Interview days are scheduled on Fridays from October through January.

The program coordinator will contact all applicants via ERAS who have been accepted for an interview.  Interviews will then be scheduled through a separate software link which the coordinator will send.  This will allow applicants to schedule their interviews on a day that works best for them.   If the need arises to reschedule you can do so on your own through this same software link.

There will be a virtual meet and greet on the Thursday before interview day with some of the current residents to provide a brief orientation and answer questions while getting acquainted. On the day of the virtual interview, each interviewee will have a one-on-one interview with the program director, associate program director, a faculty member, and a resident.
