As Organ Donor Enrollment Day approaches on October 10, we are happy to share a story that shows the power of organ donation.
Kelly Kryzak was brought to Garnet Health Medical Center’s Emergency Department suffering from a heart attack in February 2015. In the year that followed, Kelly faced a number of health struggles and was told she needed a heart replacement. She became one of nearly 10,000 New Yorkers in need of this lifesaving transplant.
Thankfully, she didn’t have to wait very long before receiving a healthy new heart in March 2016. Today, Kelly lives a normal, healthy life, but she hasn’t forgotten the incredibly generous organ donor and the team that helped save her life.
In July, Kelly returned to Garnet Health Medical Center to help perform organ transplant recipient rounds in partnership with LiveOnNY, the nonprofit organization tasked with overseeing organ donation and transplantation in New York.
During her visit, Kelly thanked the doctors and nurses who saved her life in 2015. She said she got a second chance at life thanks to a selfless organ donor and because of the amazing medical care she received at the Hospital.
