Garnet Health Medical Center - Catskills, formerly Catskill Regional Medical Center, has received the 2021 American Heart Association/American Stroke Association’s Get With The Guidelines®-Stroke Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award. The award recognizes the hospital’s commitment to ensure stroke patients receive the most appropriate treatment according to nationally recognized, research-based guidelines from the latest scientific evidence.

“Garnet Health Medical Center - Catskills is honored to be recognized by the American Heart Association for our dedication to helping patients have the best possible chance of survival after a stroke,” said Garnet Health Medical Center - Catskills Chief Executive Officer, Jonathan Schiller. “Get With The Guidelines-Stroke measures make it easier for our teams to put proven knowledge and guidelines to work on a daily basis to improve outcomes for stroke patients.”

Garnet Health Medical Center - Catskills earned the award by meeting specific quality achievement measures for the diagnosis and treatment of stroke patients at a set level for a designated period. These measures include evaluation of the proper use of medications and other stroke treatments aligned with the most up-to-date, evidence-based guidelines with the goal of speeding recovery and reducing the risk of death and disability for stroke patients. Before discharge, patients received education on managing their health, and scheduled a follow up visit.

Stroke is the number 5 leading cause of death and a cause of adult disability in the U.S. On average, someone in the U.S. suffers a stroke every 40 seconds, and nearly 795,000 people suffer a new or recurrent stroke each year. Early stroke detection and treatment are key to improving survival, minimizing disability and speeding recovery times.

Get With The Guidelines-Stroke was developed to assist healthcare professionals to provide the most up-to-date, research-based guidelines for treating stroke patients.

Each year program participants apply for the award recognition by demonstrating how their organization has committed to providing quality care for stroke patients. In addition to following treatment guidelines, Garnet Health Medical Center – Catskills also provides education to patients to help them manage their health and rehabilitation once at home.
